Gracie Jiu-Jitsu

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is the premier ground-fighting martial art. Made famous by Royce Gracie in the early UFCs in the mid-1990's, it specializes in submission grappling when both fighters are on the ground. Techniques include positional control (especially the "guard" position), and submissions such as chokes and arm locks.

It is worth noting that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu differentiates itself from standard Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for its emphasis on self-defense rather than sports competition. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu students will:

  • Learn to defend against punches and kicks from the standing position
  • Learn to neutralize an attacker’s stand up aggression while taking them to the ground, and maintaining the top position
  • Learn to defend and submit a larger opponent from the bottom position
  • Learn practical self -defense, including chokes, joint-locks, from both the standing and ground position

Testimonials

Master Pablo Popovitch

"Mike Yanez has been my student and friend for 11 years. His dedication and knowledge of competition is top notch. His students are as tough as they come anywhere in the country. His MMA team has a record of 70-17 in its first year and has shown strong Jiu Jitsu in the cage. Mike Yanez is extremely technical and very patient teacher and a great example of a good instructor. He treats everyone like famliy which I'm glad he has kept that tradition from my father and I."

Master Pablo Popovitch Seminar a Success

Just last month Highlander MMA hosted Mike Yanez's instructor, Pablo Popovitch for a two day brazilian jiu jitsu training seminar. The event was a great success and consisted of two days of training. The first day was no-gi and focused on advanced strategies and techniques useful in today's MMA (mixed martial arts) world. On the second day of training (gi training), Master Popovitch demonstrated a progressive series of techniques for passing the guard and finishing an opponent. Both days allowed for lots of practice and great instruction by Master Popovitch and Mr. Yanez. At the end of each day Master Popovitch sparred with anyone who wanted a chance to roll with the master.

We'd like to thank everyone who participated in this seminar and especially thank Master Popovitch for his willingness to travel up to Louisville from Florida for this event. We look forward to the next one!

Master Pablo Popovitch, a 3rd degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, instructs in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He has competed in the invitation-only, Abu Dahbi world grappling tournament, the most prestigious sport grappling event in the world. You can learn more about Master Popovitch at BJJCenter.com

Revolution Fight League, Louisville, KY

Louisville, KY — On December 1st at the Louisville Gardens, Highlander MMA showed once again why our fight team is at the top of the food chain in the Louisville area mixed martial arts world. Here's a fight recap:

Flores

Well folks, this fight was nothing short of exciting for the HIGHLANDERS.
With one day notice, Eric Flores stepped in dropping 10 pounds the day of
weigh-ins, to make 155 winning by — get this — his 6th RNC and beating rival, Louisville MMA! Good job, keep it up!

The Real Deal

Joe "The Deal" Heink, 170 lbs, showcased his growth in the sport, revealing that
he's got hands too. He dropped a perfect right cross to set up a takedown, and showed perfectly, why no one can DEAL with Heink, 5-0. He won in 39 seconds, RNC in what was coined "THE fight", on the streets of Louisville.

Highlander MMA vs. Louisville MMA again?

CT "The Louisville Hawk" Turner vs. Greg Taylor. CT who fights at 205 lbs weighed in at 217 lbs and Taylor weighed 260 lbs!

CT appeared to be able to end it in the first, but stuck to sprawl-n-brawl to win the decision!

GOOD JOB, CT!

But wait, there's more...

The name that puts fear in the hearts of men , "TAZ" Ferguson, 135 lbs vs. Bryan Tompkins, pro fight. Tompkins came in very confident with a sneak attack right and a takedown. Taz, responds with a neck crank, then moves to an armbar. Due to Tompkins bad instruction from his corner, "DON'T TAP", they said... Tomkins ends up with a fracture and hyper extension. Taz is a BEAST!

Chris Crawford vs. John Troyer (8-0), for RFL Title.

We threw in the towel, rather than let Crawford get hurt early in the 1st round. Chris was coming off an injury from 3 months ago. GOOD JOB, HIGHLANDER!

Videos will be up very soon! (Highlander MMA on youTube)
